Lexington Sporting Club snapped a four-match losing streak with a 3-0 shutout win over Union Omaha at Toyota Stadium. The win was the fourth of the season for the club and third shutout win.
The win brings the club’s record to 4-9-5 (17 points), standing at 10th in the league standings. The result also saw Omaha fall to 6-5-7 (25 points), residing in 7th in the league.
Lexington SC entered the match on the back of a four-match losing streak, three of which were away from home.
“I have to give all credit to the players, they’ve been working hard,” head coach Sam Stockley said. “They’ve never given up. We’ve had some tough nights where we’ve been close but hopefully now you get to see what we’re about. I’m really proud of the players and how they pushed through it and got what they deserved tonight.”
Debuting the new All Black kits and honoring Don Smart for surpassing 100 USL League One matches prior to kickoff, Lexington SC came out ready for a battle.
The home side would find the net first in the 10th minute when Nico Brown found the back of the net off an assist by Terique Mohammed.
Brown’s tenure as club leading scorer would be short lived however when Ates Diouf scored a second Lexington SC goal in the 42nd minute, once again tying Brown’s total of six goals.
Mohammed earned an assist on Diouf’s goal as well, becoming the first player in club history to record two assists in the same match.
Going into the break motivated and ahead, Lexington SC looked to secure the win in the second half.
Omaha fought to get back into the contest but Khalid Balogun would put the final nail in the coffin just two minutes after subbing into the match, finding the net in the 81st minute with Tate Robertson getting the assist.
Several key saves by Amal Knight would guarantee the shutout victory, sending the fans in attendance home happy and granting Lexington SC the three points.
“I’ve said it before, any team can beat any team in this league,” Stockley said. “We’ve been on a difficult run but these boys work and work and take information and stick together even when it’s been tough. Now this turns the corner for us, it’s exactly what they needed. A 3-0 win at home in front of the fans who have been brilliant for us and stuck with us through tough times.”
Union Omaha controlled the possession in the match, holding the ball 66.3% of the time as well as winning in expected goals, seeing a 1.01 to 0.69 advantage.
Next up for Lexington SC the club will return home on July 29 to host the Richmond Kickers, hoping to avenge a loss earlier in the season in enemy territory.
