WASHINGTON, D.C. — It was the same song, different verse for the Lexington Sporting Club women Friday night as, for the second consecutive match, the club led its opponent in nearly every offensive category, yet wound up on the wrong side of the scoresheet. Catherine Barry found the back of the net for the Gals in Green in the final minute of play, but it was too little, too late as LSC was defeated by DC Power FC, 2-1.
A particularly strong second half for Lexington bolstered the club’s advantage in expected goals (1.45-0.75), shots on target (5-3), chances created (12-8) and possession (57%-43%).
Lexington created four high-percentage scoring chances in the final 45 minutes of play, yet managed to capitalize on just one — a far-post strike by Catherine Barry from outside the penalty area in the 90+2’ minute of stoppage time. It marked Barry’s sixth goal of the season to lead Lexington.
Barry also earned the best look of the night for either side, based on expected goals, with a shot from a perfect set-piece delivery by Hannah Johnson that forced a terrific save from the DC keeper. The attempt was worth 0.79 xG, more than the value of a penalty kick. Addie McCain and Gracie Falla, a center back who subbed on as a striker in the 83’ minute, also worked wonderful looks for Lexington.
While Lexington out-created DC in the nation’s capital, Power FC still scored twice on its three shots on target. For the fifth time in LSC’s last six matches, its opposition got on the board first with DC’s goal in the 18’ minute. DC doubled its lead in the 90+1’ minute before Barry cut its advantage in half just a minute later.
Back-to-back losses for Lexington extend its current run of form to 1W-3L-2D in its last six matches and drop the club to 4W-5L-2D on the season. Three matches remain for Lexington, who still holds the fourth and final playoff spot with the shortened 14-match Fall regular-season campaign nearing its end.
