LEXINGTON, Ky. – Lexington Sporting Club announced another new addition to its 2024 USL League One roster pending league and federation approval on Monday.
25-year-old goalkeeper Nicolás “Nico” Campuzano is set to join the club after most recently playing for New England Revolution II in the MLS Next Pro league.
Hailing from Los Corrales de Buelna, Spain, the keeper started his career humbly, joining lesser known clubs such as AD Delasalle and Clube Bansander before joining the youth academy of Racing de Santander – who’s first team currently plays in the second tier of Spanish soccer – and moving to the youth academy of Real Valladolid, who’s first team is also in the second tier after a relegation from La Liga last season.
After Real Valladolid, he floated around youth academies including those of the likes of major La Liga clubs like Barcelona and Villarreal.
Campuzano then joined the third team of UD Las Palmas – who’s first team was promoted to La Liga last season – before traveling to the United States to play collegiate soccer at Portland.
Becoming a starter as a sophomore, he looked to the transfer portal where he found the Pittsburgh Panthers. Campuzano would set records at Pitt for wins and minutes played while also being honored in All-ACC teams.
In between his collegiate years he would take part in the USL League Two, joining Manhattan SC.
With his collegiate career in the past, Campuzano signed a professional contract with FC Cincinnati of the MLS, joining FC Cincinnati II in the MLS Next Pro league. He made four appearances with 14 saves in orange and blue.
Going into the 2023 season he would join the second team of the New England Revolution on a short-term loan deal.
“We welcome Nico to Lexington — he is a great addition to our GK’s. We will have a competitive group of GK’s which is exciting for them and the team. Nico has good distribution skills and his shot stopping is excellent. He is a good communicator and great teammate. We have tracked Nico for the past 3 years and are pleased he has chosen Lexington as his next step for his career.” Said head coach Darren Powell.
Looking to continue his career professionally, Campuzano joins Lexington with ambitions to compete with Jamaican national Amal Knight and fellow former Revolution keeper Austin Causey.
“I’m very excited to join an ambitious project at a young organization such as LSC, and the opportunity to help shape the future of the club,” Campuzano said.
