TAMPA, Fla. — The USL Championship Week 28 Team of the Week is littered with Greens after Lexington Sporting Club’s emphatic 4-1 win over Oakland Roots SC on Sept. 12. Phillip Goodrum’s hat trick earned the forward Player of the Week honors, while Blaine Ferri and Xavier Zengue were named to the Team of the Week Starting XI. Additionally, Marcus Epps received a TOTW bench award.
Goodrum was sensational Saturday evening, bagging the third hat trick in men’s club history with goals in the 22’, 78’ and 87’ minutes. It was also the third three-goal effort of Goodrum’s career.
“It was a huge result for the group,” said Goodrum after the match. “It felt like a gut check game for us, and we really showed some character. I’m thrilled to get a hat trick, but the team effort tonight was what really got the job done.”
He finished the night with a season-high six shots, four of which were on target. Goodrum also won four of seven duels.
Ferri tallied two assists in the match, assisting Goodrum’s second and Marcus Epps’ goal to boot. They marked the sixth and seventh assists of the season for the midfielder to lead the club and tie him for the second-most in the USL Championship.
Overall, he created three scoring chances, led Lexington with 15 passes in the final third and won one of two duels.
Zengue assisted Goodrum’s first goal and also created three scoring chances in total. His five touches inside Oakland’s box were second only to Goodrum, and the right back won four of his six duels. Zengue also won three of four tackle attempts and notched an interception.
Not to be forgotten, Marcus Epps logged a goal and an assist himself, bringing his season totals to five scores and four helpers. Like Ferri and Zengue, Epps created three scoring chances and whipped in two dangerous crosses.
Epps led LSC with four successful dribbles and won possession five times.
Goodrum is the first LSC man to walk away with Player of the Week honors this season. Epps was previously named the Round 1 Prinx Tires USL Cup Player of the Round, and Aaron Molloy was awarded the league’s July Player of the Month.
Week 28 marks the second Team of the Week award for Goodrum this season, the second for Zengue, the fourth for Epps and the seventh for Ferri.
