Lexington Sporting Club suffered a 3-2 defeat against Greenville Triumph SC for its first home loss of the season on Friday.
The loss sees the club fall to 1-2-1 (4 points) on the new season while Greenville improved to 2-0-1 (7 points). The Boys in Green currently occupy sixth in the league table while Greenville took second.
Lexington SC entered the match on the back of a defeat on the road at One Knoxville SC, which was the first defeat of the league season.
The match was close early as both sides didn’t want to surrender an inch, but the home side went into the break with the advantage after Louisville City FC loanee Issac Cano netted his first goal of the league season in his first professional league start.
Coming back out in the second half, fellow former Louisville City FC ace Cameron Lancaster made the lead 2-0 off a beautiful assist by Azaad Liadi in the box.
The visitors were able to take one back in the 65th minute before the train properly came off the tracks in the 80th minute.
With a dispute in the box leading to Lexington SC goalkeeper Amal Knight being shown two rapid yellow cards for a red card, the home side was forced to play down a man with backup goalkeeper Nico Campuzano for the remainder of the match.
Campuzano surrendered the tying goal in the 84th minute before the fourth official showed 14 minutes of stoppage time being added. It would eventually become 15 official minutes with more played.
With Lexington SC fighting for every possession, disaster struck in the 90+8th minute when a throw-in was unable to be saved by Campuzano with Kaelon Fox making a desperation play but ultimately being unable to save the ball. Fox was hit with an own goal for his effort.
With the officials blowing the whistle for full-time, Greenville controlled the possession in the match, holding onto the ball 61-percent of the time while also slightly winning in expected goals with a 1.89-1.76 advantage.
Next up for Lexington SC, the Boys in Green will return to the road for a fixture against Tormenta FC in Statesboro, Georgia. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, April 6.
