TAMPA, Fla. – Lexington SC forward Ates Diouf was named USL League One Player of the Week while Kaelon Fox also featured in the Team of the Week for week 12 the league office announced Tuesday.
“We are all really pleased with Ates’ performance,” Lexington SC head coach and sporting director Sam Stockley said. “He is a wonderful player and a wonderful person. He’s been electric in training over the last couple of weeks, and we’ve all seen on a daily basis the types of goals he can score. We’re pleased to see that come out last Saturday and we look forward to him scoring many more goals.”
In a 2-2 draw against Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC, Diouf scored the first brace in club history, finishing a late offsides call away from scoring the first hat trick as well. The Senegalese forward amassed a total of six shots in the match, three of which were on target.
“It means a lot to me to be named Player of the Week,” Diouf said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to play with such great teammates and having a coaching staff that believes in me and helps me a lot, without them this would not be possible. I look forward to continuing to improve my game.”
Diouf’s Player of the Week status puts Lexington SC in first place with now three different players having earned the honors after Owen Green’s go-ahead goal for the club’s first win and Amal Knight’s penalty save to secure victory over Charlotte Independence.
As for Fox, he completed two tackles, one clearance and two interceptions in a strong defensive effort to help ensure the draw and a sharing of points.
With 10 games now in the books, Lexington SC will look to build on the momentum from Saturday’s draw as it travels to Statesboro for a rematch against Tormenta FC, which Lexington earned its first ever win against. Following the road trip the club will return home for a rematch against Chattanooga Red Wolves SC at Toyota Stadium in Georgetown, Ky., on Wednesday, June 14.
